development of Flamenco Guitar and Dance in the United States, René Heredia
is a performer, teacher, choreographer, composer and recording artist. René has
seeded the Rocky Mountain Area with many flamenco guitar and dance students, and
has been twice nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado
Dance Alliance. He has done command performances for Presidents Gerald Ford and
Jimmy Carter; and his appearances on the Ed Sullivan and Bill Cosby television

States.Darol
Anger's Republic of Strings
Sat, June 5 A protégé of Stephane Grappelli, in
the lineage of Bill Monroe, and an original member of the David Grisman's
Quintet, Darol Anger is now one of the world's pre-eminent fiddlers.
Darol's main creative focus, Republic of Strings, offers the opportunity
to see a constantly developing population of young virtuoso string players,
previously including Mike Block, Scott Law, Lauren Rioux, & Sharon Gilchrist.
Republic of Strings has created a musical landscape in which bluegrass, jazz,
classical, pop, and world music mingles, yielding a sound-experience which the
Los Angeles Times describes as "cutting edge...wildly virtuosic...more
than a mere Republic, [they have] the sound of a musical United Nations."
Jesse Winchester
Sat, June 19 You could stock a
crowd-pleasing jukebox with the songs of Jesse Winchester, especially
those better-known versions of his songs made popular by artists ranging from
Joan Baez to Elvis Costello and Jimmy Buffett. The strength, sincerity and humor
in his songs combine the laidback gentility of his Memphis upbringing with the
perspective gained from his longtime Canadian exile, self-imposed in 1967 upon
receipt of his draft notice. Winchester’s skill in capturing vivid small town
vignettes, heartfelt love and love-lost situations, and goodtime celebrations
has yielded a litany of songs that seem familiar even from the first listen.
Andy McKee
Fri, July 9
Hailed as one of the world’s finest acoustic soloists, Andy McKee has
enjoyed over 20 million views collectively for his Youtube videos, success which
is a testament to the changing nature of the music industry as well as people’s
desire for something new and interesting to listen to. At one point, Andy held
the #1, #2 and #3 positions for Top-Rated Videos of All Time on the hugely
popular video website. It is Andy’s attention to song structure and melodic
content that elevates him above the typical guitarist. Trying different things
with the guitar such as altered tunings, partial capos, percussive hits, and
tapping is all made to seem easy in Andy's hands as he flawlessly uses these
compositional tools to create some of todays finest crafted music for the steel
string acoustic guitar.
Roger McGuinn
Sat, July 24
L2 Arts & Culture Center, Colfax
How does one turn, turn, turn a fledging career with a successful band into a
flourishing solo career? Just ask former Byrds guitarist Roger Mcguinn.
After nearly a decade in The Byrds, McGuinn felt a solo career beckoning. In
1973, he released the self-titled solo debut, Roger McGuinn, featuring
participation from former band mates including innovative country-rock guitarist
Clarence White, Crosby and Hillman as well as a contribution from Bob Dylan who
played mouth harp on the track “I’m So Restless.” Roger has since released
several albums to critical acclaim, including his sophomore solo effort,
Peace On You, and the autobiographical, Life from Mars. In 2002,
McGuinn enjoyed a Grammy nomination in the category of "Best Traditional Folk
Album" for Treasures from the Folk Den, a collection of favorite songs
which featured collaborations from Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Judy Collins to
name a few.
